In an exciting leap towards the future, POSCO Holdings, the South Korean steel giant, has embarked on a cooperative venture with French quantum computing developer PASQAL and Korea’s Qunova Computing. Their mission is clear – to further advance quantum computing technologies. Co-founded by Alain Aspect, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, PASQAL is renowned for its expertise in quantum computer hardware and software development. Qunova Computing, on the other hand, has carved a niche in developing quantum computing software for new materials, making it an influential player in the realm of quantum computing technologies.

POSCO Holdings, PASQAL, and Qunova Computing’s Collaboration

By harnessing POSCO Group’s AI technology and PASQAL’s quantum computer technology, the collaborative force aims to optimize the eco-friendly steelmaking process. Additionally, this union hopes to lead the development of secondary battery materials. In essence, this groundbreaking collaboration merges the traditional industry of steelmaking with cutting-edge quantum computing technologies to innovate and evolve.

“We expect to secure quantum computing technology through cooperation with PASQAL and utilize quantum computing technology for the group’s main business, steelmaking, and eco-friendly future material technology development,” stated Kim Ji-yong, head of POSCO Holdings New Experience of Technology Hub.

Quantum Computing: The Potential Applications

The significance of quantum computers transcends traditional computing by leveraging quantum physical properties. It’s a groundbreaking technology that’s not only expected to solve human energy, food, and health problems that supercomputers cannot solve but also bring innovation in various fields such as automobiles, chemistry, medicine, logistics, and finance.

Georges-Oliver Reymond, CEO of PASQAL, added, “Quantum computers have the potential to implement computing tasks that would be intractable with classical means.”

Looking Towards a Sustainable Future

POSCO Holdings consortium was selected as a national project by the National Research Foundation of Korea’s Quantum Computing-based Quantum advantage Challenge Research Project. This consortium plans to utilize quantum computers for material characteristics analysis and increase efficiency by reducing the time required.
